I needed to find more space on my 5G ipod video 80GB for my itunes collection. I looked at upgrading and found information about replacing the 80GB hard drive for this 240GB model. I took a chance on it, basically, not knowing that I would be able to successfully swap the drive over. I found useful help online using a general search (one tip I can share is that I did not need to complete the Windows format prompt - I used the itunes 'Restore ipod' feature to prepare the new drive for syncing). I am pleased with the result. I am not a professional computer tech. I have replaced the battery before, so had some knowledge of opening the ipod. If you are careful and patient, doing this upgrade yourself is possible and the benefit is a bigger drive than that generally sold by Apple. BUT take some advice, or do a course, if you are a complete novice, as there will be no financial savings if you fry the motherboard with static during the process. ALSO this upgrade is not suitable for all ipod models so check that out, too, before you purchase and make sure you have the correct amperage battery installed.Read full review
I bought two of these for my Dell Latitude D430s. They work great, with a catch. Windows XP will not install on these drives. Windows Vista installs fine, and presumably later versions as well. XP doesn't install even if you slipstream the Intel RST AHCI drivers into the installation disk. This drive is an Advanced Format Drive (AFD) which means that it has 4K physical sectors and 512 byte logical sectors. XP doesn't have support for AFDs, but you can add support by installing the AHCI drivers. However, the AHCI drivers only work with SATA drives, and this is a PATA drive. I suspect that this is the only PATA AFD ever made, and so it fell through the support cracks. If anyone knows differently, please message me. I have a legacy device which needs XP, and having XP work with these drives would sure simplify things. This drive is a good value compared to other 1.8" drives, but, of course, is pricey compared to the capacity the same money would buy in a 2.5" drive. But if your laptop requires a 1.8" drive, this is the most capacity for the money that is available.Read full review
I bought this to replace the original 80Gb drive in my iPod Video (5.5), as I'd run out of space. This 240Gb version is a direct replacement, and as long as you've got the correct iPod opening tools (99p from eBay), and follow the excellent on-line guides, it's a pretty easy swap. It works perfectly, both in "Apple Mode" and using Rockbox which is what I always run. It's as silent as the original Toshiba drive and from the specs it should give the same run-time. If you need the space and can stretch to the cost, it's a great upgrade; I can't think of any down-sides.
Excellent hard drive if you need a 1.8". I replaced the stock Toshiba hard drive in my HP netbook with this drive and it has been great. Same physical size as a 120gb and a little bigger than the 60Gb the netbook shipped with but just remove the housing the 60gb ships and it will fit in the space. Definite improvement over my existing drive. It sems to run faster and its really nice to have 240gigs to play with.
This is amazing. I was running a 60gb HDD and upgraded to this, and my computer is a world of difference now, I have 4 times more space and i can download and transfer files faster than i ever have been. Well worth the money. The seller was outstanding too. They always kept in touch with me, and even sent me a free gift that was a universal card reader.
