I got this lens to use as a wide-angle option for shooting motion on my RED Epic and also stills on my DSLR. It is a solidly built lens, made from real metal and real glass. This is apparent in the weight of the lens. It is sharp all the way open at f/2.0 and is color matched with the other lenses in the Zeiss ZF.2/ZE line up, which is very convenient. It vignettes a little at f/2.0, but it is only noticeable when pointed at blank white walls, which is something that no one would ever do outside of a "test" environment. The vignetting goes away when stopped down. Despite its very wide angle of view, it is very rectilinear, i.e. it does not have the fish-eye effect. It is a manual focus lens with hard stops and a long focus throw (probably around than 200°) and that makes it handy when using it on a digital cinema camera or when shooting video on a DSLR. For stills shooters, the absence of autofocus will slow you down, but considering how wide the lens is, it's hard to miss focus entirely. Compared to the other lenses in the Zeiss ZF.2/ZE family, it is one of the sharpest performers. It is on par with the 35/1.4 and out-resolves the 50/1.4 and the 85/1.4. For people shooting for motion, this is the best "budget" wide lens you will find. The drawbacks are the ones inherent to photo lenses, e.g. lack of a focus gear, clicking aperture. But the most affordable cine lens at this focal length is probably 2-3 times the price, excluding the super cheap/super soft/super useless lenses from Rokinon. For people shooting stills only, the lack of autofocus and the price point may be turn offs. If you're trying to round out a set of Zeiss lenses you already own, it could be worth it. If you already have a lens at this focal length, it might not, especially considering that a lot of other 24/25mm lenses available tend to be up to a stop faster and often somewhat cheaper. If you shoot both motion and stills, this lens hits a very good middle ground of having the versatility to do both.Read full review
This is a beautiful lens. Worth every penny. SO glad I sprang for the f2 instead of the f2.8. Solid build quality, feels wonderful in your hands, not plasticky at all like most other modern lenses.
