I bought the Archos 5 to use while traveling on the motorcycle to stay in contact via E mail and some light web browsing. I have used it for over a month now and recently on a long road trip. The good; Small and tough, packs easily into a tank bag or pocket Bigger screen than a smartphone Good selection of older apps via the APPSLIB app Battery life better than I expected GPS navigation FM receiver and transmitter The not so good; You must pay a third party for the maps to navigate Charging the battery is slow Older 1.6 Android OS means recent apps will not work unless written to work on it. Small size leads to mistyping, use a stylus for accuracy Some of the "premium content" like the Media Club app has been discontinued, leaving a useless item on the dock It is not Mac compatible. Speaker is not very loud. I like the 5, I had no trouble using it except for selecting the wrong link or mistyping on web pages until I zoomed in. AppsLib had a great selection of apps that work on the 5, I was able to get everything I needed for my usage. Android 1.6 worked well with the unit and has a good feature set. The Archos 5 is good for travel, biking, and hiking. It is small and packs easily. For home or office use a 7 or 10 inch device would be better. I will be getting two more of these as gifts for my two teenaged nephews, they were impressed by the size and ability of the 5.Read full review
Great little device as long as you buy it with realistic expectations. The Android operating system works well, though I couldn't get youtube to work until I added it with the "market hack". The ability to download Android Apps and customize it is a great addition to previous Archos players. It's a a great media player, and works well loading videos and music for use on the go. People looking for a media player that also has some other cool added features will enjoy this. People looking for a full-fledged tablet or laptop replacement (i.e. iPad) will probably be somewhat disappointed.
When I first bought the Archos 5 Internet Tablet with the DVR docking station, I was excited to start learning it. WOW Droid software running on Windows CE, a Excelerometer to mimic what the Iphone can do, WiFi, Blue Tooth, FM Transmiter to send my tunes to the car or home stereo, MP3 player, Video player and a navigator all in one! I thought I would be in heaven! Then reality struck 30 days of hell trying to program the stupid thing, even just to make any of the applications or opperating system work without crashing and rebooting every time I would try to run an app? UHG!!!!! and then the DVR, found out the hard way it was not compatible with just about anything. Not my cable, TV, VCRs and it would not even play videos transfered from my computer! apparently Achos neglected to tell me before I bought the unit that their system would not be compatible for years with all the popular formats (like flash) which makes it very dificult to utilize services that you already pay for. Lets not forget the amount of time I spent on the phone talking with customer support at Archos to correct all of the problems I was experiencing. Mind you with no success. 5 calls (when I was able to get through to a representative) lasted 2 hours each. The one thing I bought it for, the navigation application, never did work correctly and it would not transmit the audio from the Archos 5 internet tablet to the car radio without a pair of headphones attached...what a dumb idea, just what I need annother cord dangeling from my dash. All in all I would not recomend a purchase of an Archos 5 internet tablet.Read full review
This machine has tons of room for whatever you want to do. I would highly suggest that you DON'T run any other firmware on this tablet other than what the manufacture suggests. These machines that are hacked and running 2.2 operating system are very unstable. Froyo for this machine is still in the development stages. It's a open source OS. If this company would want it on there they would have released that version. Don't be fooled by people selling you this with Froyo 2.2 as a operating system. It will make this tablet run terrible. Stick with what the company provides and enjoy it for what it is. There is still access to the andriod apps. And there are A LOT! This is a great deal on a good running machine.
